Report from NILG conference
Chair Burrows keynotes NILG second day. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) Chair Charlotte Burrows made her first keynote speech at the National Industrial Liaison Group (NILG) conference on August 3. Speaking to the largest equal employment opportunity (EEO) conference, Burrows said her priorities are combating systemic discrimination and the civil rights implications of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Combating systemic discrimination is about more than just addressing individual acts but also focusing on broader practices and "cultures of exclusion," according to Burrows. As for COVID, she said, "It is not just a health crisis, it is a civil rights crisis," given its effect on women and people of color. In turning to pay equity, she said she was awaiting the results of the National Academy of Sciences' (NAS) report on its Component 2 data and was looking forward to hearing how best to "address the issue."
