Disability by association

Although the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) protects employees from discrimination based on their association with a disabled individual in addition to protecting them from bias based on their own disabling condition, that cause of action wasn't available under Massachusetts law until recently. But a recent ruling from the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court (SJC) has expanded Mass. Gen. L. Ch. 151B, the state antidiscrimination law, to bar employers from discriminating against employees based not only on their own handicap or disability but also on the handicap of a person with whom they associate.
